Werewolves on Wheels – August 6

by hystericeric

It’s probably fair to say that there aren’t many biker werewolf movies floating around out there, so this will undoubtedly be your favorite of the genre.

The flimsy plot concerns some rowdy bikers who have a run-in with some hooded monks, who happen to be in some sort of witchcult that puts a werewolf curse on them!

It’s an enjoyable and well-shot romp, full of violence, ridiculous improvised dialogue, rock music, and motorcycle riding.

Contrary to popular rumor, the cast is peopled with thespians and stuntmen, not real bikers. These are actors, folks! They look like they’re having a blast, too, as you would if you had talked someone else into paying for a bunch of your buddies to get together an d get wasted for a few weeks and ride motorcycles around.

Gang leader Steve Oliver had been in other biker movies and Peyton Place, Barry “Eve of Destruction” McGuire rocks the jewfro, Billy Gray was a child star fresh off a pot bust, and the delightfully weird Severn Darden is a joy to watch as the Satanic cult leader. The rest of the cast is filled out with stuntmen and biker movie regulars. The director had ties to Roger Corman and would soon work as an art director for Russ Meyer.

Campy, low-budget, cheesy, bone-headed. Yes, all these adjectives and more suggest themselves when discussing this little movie. Not that that is always a bad thing, though. This is another charming piece of 70s trash (don’t pick it up!) undervalued by The Man! Dig it, baby, it’s a real gone gasser!
