MARIHAUNA
1936 - Directed by Dwain Esper

“It’s most terrifying effect is that it fires the user to extreme cruelty and license.” So begins the terrific Marihauna, a message of dire warning to parents of fine Gotham upbringing. Gasp as Marihauna follows the travails of a family of manners torn asunder by the Ice Queen of the Snow Peddlers. Thrill as Marihauna illuminates the consequence of innocent college youth gone wild partaking in the wonton world of…drinking. Beer consumption. Happy hops. Bubbling brews in bars. The “Giggle Weed” doesn’t come out till almost-halfway through this flick. The ghastly result? A beach house turns into Woodstock ‘99. With plenty of nudity shots of nubile “teenage” nymphets skinny dipping in the sea, it’s questionable as to whether Marihauna is propaganda or pornaganda for the righteous. Untimely adult themes such as urination and petting add to the academia of this important 1936 film. In terms of actors running around a set ‘stoned’ or drunk, Marihuana presents a more realistic (as in ‘oh, I’ve been there...I think’) view of partying than Reefer Madness and more plot depth. What will become of blonde Burma ‘Brady’ living in the shadow of her successful older sister? ‘Elaine! Elaine! Elaine!’ Bonus points for the fastest heroin injections in film history. IT’S DELICIOUS AND I LOVE IT!
